DTC Product Selection: Validate Demand with Shipping Data
DTC product selection often looks at search volume and competitor sales, but shipping-side data is overlooked: which items ship well, which return a lot, which have high shipping share - these are themselves demand and profit signals.
1. Easy-to-ship items = fulfillment-friendly items
Light, small, non-fragile, simple-compliance items have low logistics cost and fewer damages, so fatter profit at the same price. Treat fulfillment friendliness as a plus in selection.
2. Watch items with high returns
If a product's returns cluster on does not match description, the page or the item has a problem - fix it before pushing, do not just burn ad budget.
3. Re-price items with high shipping share
Heavy or bulky-light goods can eat half the margin in shipping; factor volumetric weight into selection so pricing does not lose money.
