Bonded / Overseas / Pre-positioned Warehouses: A Cross-border Seller Glossary
Too many warehouses in cross-border fulfillment: bonded, overseas, pre-positioned, forwarding - names sound alike, positioning differs hugely. One table clears it up.
Overseas warehouse
A warehouse in the destination country (US/EU/Japan, etc.), close to customers, 2-3 day delivery - fits evergreen winners, but rent and dead-stock risk are high.
Pre-positioned warehouse (China pre-positioned warehouse)
A domestic (e.g., Shenzhen) warehouse, ship from one piece, flexible and low-cost; orders are picked and labeled domestically before export - fits testers, long-tail and volatile products.
Forwarding warehouse
Bulk goods inbound first, then transferred on demand to overseas / platform / customer warehouses - resolving the ship too much at once vs. stockout dilemma.
Bonded warehouse
Used for cross-border e-commerce bonded stocking models (e.g., bonded-zone shipping); compliance and lead-time requirements vary - suited to specific model players.
How to choose
The most common combo for small and mid-size sellers: pre-positioned warehouse for breadth plus overseas warehouse for depth, scheduled centrally via OMS. Youmanman Cloud Warehouse is positioned for China pre-positioned fulfillment and inventory forwarding.
